Alexander Parkes was was born December 29, 1813. Son of a brass lock maker, Alexander was considered to be quite the prolific metallurgircal (study of metals) and chemical genius who, in his early years, engaged in a long apprenticeship as a casting specialist before earning 80-plus British patents including, but certainly not limited to:

  • 1841: Process for electroplating
  • 1850: Process for desilvering lead
  • 1855: Developing the first thermoplastic

Alexander passed away on June 29, 1890 and was survived by his two wives and 20 children.
